How is fiscal year variant assigned to a Company Code ?
A Fiscal Year Variant is assigned to a Company Code in SAP through transaction code OB37. We can assign same fiscal year variant to multiple company codes.
Step 2 — What is Fiscal Year Variant?
Fiscal Year Variant defines:
Financial year start & end
Number of posting periods (usually 12)
Special periods (usually 4)
Example:
India companies → April to March
US/EU companies → Jan to Dec
Step 3 — The Key Rule (Interview Question ⚠️)
One Fiscal Year Variant can be assigned to multiple company codes.
But…
One Company Code can have only ONE Fiscal Year Variant.
This is a classic exam/interview trap.
Step 4 — What the Screenshot Scenario Means
They gave an enterprise example:
You have 10 company codes.
Split like this:
| Country | Company Codes | Fiscal Year |
|---|---|---|
| India | 7 company codes | Apr → Mar |
| Other countries | 3 company codes | Jan → Dec |
Now think like a consultant:
Would you create 10 fiscal year variants?
That would be stupid and unnecessary.
Instead:
You create only TWO fiscal year variants.
| Fiscal Year Variant | Period | Assigned Company Codes |
|---|---|---|
| FYV-IN | Apr → Mar | 7 company codes |
| FYV-K4 | Jan → Dec | 3 company codes |
That’s what the paragraph is trying to say.
Step 5 — Why SAP Designed It This Way
Because large corporations operate globally.
Example:
A company like Nestlé / TCS / Unilever has:
India entities
US entities
Europe entities
Each country follows different statutory financial years.
SAP allows reuse of configuration across company codes.
This is called organizational scalability.
Step 6 — The Assignment Step (SPRO Path)
This is the actual configuration:
SPRO → Financial Accounting → Financial Accounting Global Settings → Fiscal Year → Assign Company Code to Fiscal Year Variant
This is where the link happens.
Step 7 — Real Consultant Insight (This is what interviewers like)
Why is this assignment critical?
Because Fiscal Year Variant controls:
Posting periods (OB52)
Asset depreciation calculation
Year-end closing
Financial reporting periods
Balance carryforward
Wrong FYV = entire finance process breaks.
This is not cosmetic config.
Step 8 — Interview Answer Version
If asked: How is Fiscal Year Variant assigned to Company Code?
Your answer should be:
Fiscal Year Variant defines the financial year and posting periods.
A single fiscal year variant can be assigned to multiple company codes, but a company code can have only one fiscal year variant.
This allows global organizations to use different fiscal calendars while reusing configuration.
The assignment is done in SPRO under Financial Accounting Global Settings.
Now tell me honestly:
Do you fully understand this concept now, or do you want me to test you with scenario questions?
