What are the Difference between Open Item Management and Open Item Management by Ledger Group.

Open Item Management (OIM)

Used for accounts where items must remain open until cleared.

Examples:

GR/IR

 Vendor reconciliation

 Customer reconciliation

 Bank clearing

 Employee advances

Clearing happens through transactions like F-03, F-44, F-32.

 Key rule:

Once postings exist in a GL account, you cannot activate or deactivate OIM unless the balance is zero.

Open Item Management by Ledger Group

This exists in New GL / S4HANA environments.

 Meaning:

Open item management is applied only for a specific ledger.

 Example scenario:

 Company uses:

 Leading ledger → IFRS

 Non-leading ledger → Local GAAP

In IFRS ledger clearing might be required, while in local GAAP it may not.

So SAP allows ledger-specific clearing logic.

This is rare in basic implementations, which is why interviewers ask it.
